Two Capitol Police officers were reportedly injured and taken to the hospital after a suspect rammed them with a car, according to the U.S. Capitol Police.
The suspect, who reportedly got out of the car with a knife after smashing into the barricade that keeps unauthorized vehicles from entering the complex, is in custody and was also transported to the hospital after being shot by the police, according to law enforcement.
“CRITICAL INCIDENT: USCP is responding to the North Barricade vehicle access point along Independence Avenue for reports someone rammed a vehicle into two USCP officers. A suspect is in custody. Both officers are injured. All three have been transported to the hospital,” the U.S. Capitol Police tweeted. They later corrected their tweet to confirm that the incident took place off of Constitution Avenue.

A text sent to Capitol staff from the U.S. Capitol Police read: “Capitol: External security threat, no entry or exit is permitted, stay away from exterior windows, doors. If outside, seek cover.”

Ambulances and stretchers also arrived, and further video showed a helicopter landing on the lawn, apparently to pick up the injured individuals.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed that officers had been attacked, tweeting: “Praying for the United States Capitol Police officers who were attacked at the Capitol. We are still learning what’s taken place. Grateful to all the USCP and first responders who are on the scene.”
