U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy on Sunday said the administration would not rule out extending the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for private businesses to employers with fewer than 100 workers. Last Thursday, the Department of Labor published its emergency temporary standard rule stipulating that businesses with 100 or more workers mandate vaccinations or weekly COVID-19 testing as well as mask-wearing for those who are not vaccinated. Fines could reach tens of thousands of dollars per violation. When asked during an ABC News interview on Sunday about whether that policy, which is slated to go into effect Jan. 4, would be extended to smaller businesses, Murthy stated that “certainly nothing is off the table.” However, he said that the “focus right now is implementing the current rule.” Just hours after the administration published its rule, lawsuits began to pile up.
