The U.S. State Department said on Nov. 8 it is “deeply concerned” about the deteriorating health of citizen journalist Zhang Zhan, who has been undertaking a hunger strike yet force-fed during her detention for reporting on the early days of the global pandemic in China. “According to multiple reports citing her relatives’ comments, Ms. Zhang is near death,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters during a briefing. He said: “We have repeatedly expressed our serious concerns about the arbitrary nature of her detention and her mistreatment during it.
